Z’s Journey to Enhanced Independence
At IBC Healthcare, we thrive in sharing the significant achievements and journeys of the people we support. It is important to celebrate the positive outcomes that their new homes and bespoke care packages have enabled. Each success story fuels our commitment to empowering those we support, to not only reach but exceed their potential.
At the time of being referred to iBC, Z lived with his parents. He was fast approaching the age of 18; an age where many of us hope to have our own homes. Z is a vibrant young man, who has a diagnosis of severe Learning Disabilities, Autism, Sensory Impairments, PICA and Misophonia. Having faced many challenges everyday in association with his anxieties, which was communicated through behaviours that challenge, and self-injurious behaviour. Upon iBC’s robust three-step assessment process, Z’s care and needs assessment reads:
“I am 17 year old teenager, and I want acceptance. To feel part of the community like any teenager might, but I am not neurotypical. My perspective on the world is vastly different from most people’s experiences. Because of my autism, my experience and perception on my daily environment is ruled by my sensory input. This means that my environment is louder and more complicated, and more confusing than a typical person’s experience. My sensory needs are at the forefront of my thoughts constantly. I am battling constant anxiety due to this.”
Following iBC’s assessment; we found, and secured a property in Nottinghamshire – in partnership with Nottinghamshire County Council, Z and his parents. Where we could adapt the property to create the perfect environment for him. An environment that would support Z’s significant sensory needs, such as his profound sensitivity to noise. In conjunction with property works, iBC delivered a robust 6-week transition, whereby Z’s new dedicated support team visited him at his home to build a strong rapport, using carefully presented social stories, prior to his move soon after his 18th birthday.
Z moved into his new home in August 2023. As anticipated, transitioning into his first home without his parents and familiar routine resulted in some anxieties. Stemming from shifts in environment, social circle, and daily routine. Nevertheless, with the dedicated assurance from his new support team, and person-centred care planning. Z gradually found his footing and embarked on his journey to enhanced independence.
Eight months later:
Z has flourished in discovering a new sense of self, and autonomy. Z eagerly engages in daily activities such as meal preparation, community integration, and pursuing his favoured activities; demonstrating remarkable progress. He is now enjoying the everyday freedom of supported living, with the right level of support in an environment tailored to him. He now finds joy in maintaining his home and kicks back with cup of tea. His new daily routine includes leisurely walks through his nearby park.
Z’s mum speaks on her son’s progress and the support that he and his family have been provided.
“IBC’s support is more than supervision, or personal care needs. It’s day-to-day reinforcement and celebration of the person’s abilities, and positive self-identity.”
Z’s mum mentions that she believes that her son has adapted well to supported living and the support he receives. Whereby, IBC work collaboratively with his family to ensure Z is always at the forefront of all decision making, in every aspect of his life. All choices, no matter how small, Z’s voice is always heard.
Z’s Mum also says:
“I feel very lucky that my son has such a caring team behind him at IBC. Families can’t help but worry whether their loved ones are being looked after to an excellent standard, or if they are settled and happy in their placement.”
“My son has never been happier, calmer and his life is now filled with enriched experiences and meaningful relationships with his loved ones. Thankyou to IBC, from the bottom of my heart.”
We are incredibly proud of Z and all he has accomplished in just eight-months. His journey of growth and independence is a testament to his character and willingness to learn and enhance his skills. We are honoured to have been part of his journey so far. We look forward to continuing to celebrate his achievements and supporting him in reaching even greater heights in the future.
A huge thank you to Adele Rickett and her team in the North Midlands. You really do, #doamazingeveryday
